- SETTING UP THE COVE:
- *****************************************************************************
-
-
- Installation
- ------------
-
-
- 1. Create a directory for the game: example: "BBS\DOORS\THECOVE"
-
- 2. Make sure that ALL files listed above and in contents.doc
- are located in that directory.
-
- *** NOTE ***
- If you are currently running a game of TheCove then do not unzip the
- FIRST.ZIP! This contains the generic conversations and will overwrite
- yours!
-
- 3. Change Directories to the game directory.
- example: CD C:\BBS\DOORS\THECOVE
- Type "COVECFG.EXE" and hit the <ENTER> key. The first thing
- you want to do is (1) Create the "THECOVE.CTL" file.
- Edit each of the Entries.
-
- Two versions of a fully commented .CTL file are provided for
- manual configuration. One is identified by the game title
- (example: GAME.CTL) and this is the UN-EDITED version and the
- other identified as SAMPLE.CTL is what a CTL file should look
- like AFTER it is edited. If all else fails - try the one I use
- on MY support BBS (Sample.CTL). If you have fossil drivers be
- sure to uncomment the 'fossil' option. If you have a modem set
- to a non-std IRQ be sure to use the PORT# option for that com
- port.
-
- Where to put this file?
- Put this file wherever you are running the game executable file
- from. If you ran the COVECFG program from the Game Directory as
- instructed, then it will already be in the correct place.
-
- 4. EDITOR: If you are registered then you will be able to alter some of
- the game settings. If you are NOT registered then you will be
- able to view the game settings, but NOT SAVE them.
-
- 5. Now, "exit program" after you are completed. That's all there
- is to it! If you ever need to reset or re-start the game just
- run COVECFG.EXE again.
-
- 6. Install the door into your BBS software (see your BBS
- software documentation for more information). A batch file is
- normally used to do this. To run the program just have your
- batch file change to the THECOVE directory and run COVE.BAT
- Thats all there is to it! Three different batch files sample
- are included to help you run the game. These are included with
- the game for editing and your use. Remember when writing the
- batch routines for my games you must ensure that the game is
- run from it's home directory AND that the game knows where to
- find the drop file. Satisfy these two requirements and you
- should have no problems running the game as long as the other
- setup criteria has been met. For dorinfo systems try using the
- following:
-
-
- Sample Batch File
- -----------------
-
- COPY DORINFOx.DEF \RBBS\DOORS\THECOVE\*.*
- CD \RBBS\DOORS\THECOVE
- COVE.BAT
- del dorinfox.def
- CD \RBBS
-
- --> Please note that you replace the "x" with the appropriate
- node number. Ex: Dorinfo1.def ; Dorinfo2.def ; etc... as
- specified in the COVECFG program under 'CREATE
- "THECOVE.CTL" file under NODE NUMBER.
-
- 7. *** NOTE *** The game .dat files will not be created until someone
- enters the door.
-
-
-

- PROBLEM SOLVING:
- *****************************************************************************
-
- Common Problems (Locked Bauds, High Speed modems, etc)
- ------------------------------------------------------
-
- 1. The game does NOT require a fossil driver to run.
-
- 2. If you are running a high speed modem (9600 baud or above),
- then I suggest you run your bbs/mailer/doors at a locked baud
- rate. On high speed error correcting modems, locking the baud
- rate will have a noticeable increase on the speed of text that
- is sent. It's beyond the scope of this document to discuss
- configuring your BBS and mailer for a locked baud rate; you may
- wish to consult those docs for information on that. Here are a
- few things to keep in mind when setting up GAME with a locked
- baud rate:
-
- a. When using a locked baud rate, you might want to
- use a FOSSIL driver. This game will work at high
- speeds without one though. BNU is a good fossil driver
- which can even be loaded and unloaded before and after
- you run this game.
-
- b. If you are using a fossil, then make sure to tell the
- fossil that the port is locked. For BNU, to lock com1:
- at 38,400, you would use something like "L0=38400" on
- BNU's command line.
-
- c. If you lock the baud for one program, it must be
- locked for everything. You can't lock the baud for just
- this game, but not your BBS/mailer.
-
- d. You may use the LOCKBAUD option in the COVECFG.EXE program
- under the "CREATE "THECOVE.CTL" FILE" option.
-
- 3. What follows is some information on possible strange
- situations that may occur:
-
- a. Low speed users can play the game, but high speed
- users get garbage.
-
- - If you are not using the DORINFOx.DEF or
- DOOR.SYS drop file then you may wish to find a
- converter program to convert whatever drop file
- your BBS produces to the DORINFOx.DEF or DOOR.SYS
- format and tell game.exe to use that.
-
- Several converter programs are readily available
- on most BBS systems. CallDoor is a good one if you
- can find it. I have it on my BBS for download if
- you need it.
-
- b. The game hangs up when a user enters the game.
-
- - Sounds like the game is getting the wrong baud
- rate somehow. Try switching over to the DOOR.SYS
- drop file method if possible.
-
- c. Text and screens are getting cut off.
-
- - If you are running with a locked baud, then this
- could be caused by some sort of FLOW CONTROL
- problem. Try using a fossil if you aren't already.
-
- d. If you're using something other than the DOOR.SYS
- drop file, then I always suggest trying to use
- DOOR.SYS if possible. It is the most reliable method
- and has had the most testing. If that is not possible
- try DORINFOx.DEF as an alternative.
-
- e. A door locks up node 1. This can happen with fossils
- or the internal communications routines because it
- uses the default comport of 1 when NONE is found in
- the dropfile or game.ctl file. To correct this make
- sure the right port is shown in the dropfile OR
- game.ctl file.
-
- f. ANSI is reflected correctly on the local screen but
- the user is getting garbage. Assuming the user has
- ANSI installed then most likely the problem is at
- your end. First make sure you have configured the
- game.ctl file to show the correct locked port rate.
- Second make sure the dropfile is passing the locked
- port rate INSTEAD of the actual conncet rate. If it
- is not passing the locked port rate then you may
- need to use a different dropfile format OR use a
- dropfile converter program to change the line to
- show the locked port rate INSTEAD of the actual
- connect rate.
-
- "Corrupted" data files
- ----------------------
- It is possible that something could happen to your game
- data file. A power outage, game crash, or other event could
- damage the data files. If you get one of these messages,
- then the best thing to do is run the SETUP.EXE program to
- reset the game.
-
-
-
- ***** HERE IS SOME ADDITIONAL PROBLEM SOVING INFORMATION *****
-
-
- Q.- When a user enters the door nothing happens and he is returned to the
- BBS! What can I do?
-
- A.- Check your BBS's execution string. It's probably not finding the file.
- It should read something like this.
-
- C:\BBS\DOORS\THECOVE\COVE.BAT
-
- *** or ***
-
- Maybe THE COVE isn't getting enough memory. (unlikely).
- THE COVE needs about 350k of conventional memory to run...
-
- You may need to tell your BBS to SWAP TO DISK instead of MEMORY to
- get enough. WWIV users use the SHRINK BBS option.
-
-
- Q.- Why am I getting "FILE ????x.CVE MISSING"? (???? = Filename)
-
- A.- The .CVE files MUST be located in the SAME directory as
- THECOVE.EXE. IF one is not there you will recieve the same ERROR.
- Unzip the .ZIP again and copy the .CVE files over.
-
-
- Q.- The DOOR just LOCKED UP in one of your ANSIS!
-
- A.- LOCK-UPS are NOT part of this game. Most likely you can fix the problem
- by changing your SETUP. Run COVECFG.EXE and try a different SETUP,
- Perhaps you are using a FOSSIL DRIVER, but have THE COVE set to use
- INTERNAL COM ROUTINES? Change it to REGULAR FOSSIL instead.
-
- If not:
-
- Try using a FOSSIL DRIVER. Some high speed modem systems will not
- function correctly with THE COVEs INTERNAL COM ROUTINES, and using
- a FOSSIL DRIVER is the only way to run the game. Don't get scared!
- This does not have to interfere with your BBS in any way. You can
- DOWNLOAD a FOSSIL DRIVER from most BBS's. A couple of suggested
- drivers are: X00.SYS by Raymond Gwinn -or- BNU by David Nugent.
- Consult the fossil drivers .DOCS for info. on how to install it.
-
-
- Q.- When the DOOR tries to open it "beeps" and says "ERROR CAN NOT FIND
- (DROP FILE)".
-
- A.- Assure that you have the correct DROP FILE entered in the .CTL file.
- and the path to the file is correct.
-
-
- Q.- When I try to run the game it says "FILE PATH NOT FOUND" or "FILES NOT
- FOUND". HELP!
-
- A.- "FILE PATH NOT FOUND" Check to assure that you have the directory
- correctly named and the path to it is correct.
-
- "FILES NOT FOUND" Check to assure that all files listed in this
- document and in the CONTENTS.DOC are in the directory.
-
-
- Q.- I've tried EVERYTHING and NOTHING works! Is there ANYTHING else
- I can do?
-
- A.- See the INSTALLATION section which covers the .CTL (control) file.
- - or -
- Contact me on my BBS for TECHNICAL SUPPORT.
- (leave a *DETAILED* description of the problem!).
- Make sure to completely fill out the bugrpt.frm.
-

- (9) PATH TO DROPFILE :C:\BBS
- (0) NODE NUMBER : 1
- (Q) Quit To Main
-
- Menu Option: What it does:

- (2) Sysop Last Name Allows you to set the sysop last name
- If your game is registered this MUST be
- the same name as specified in the regestration.
-
- (3) BBS Name Allows you to set your BBS name.
-
- (4) BBS Software Allows you to select which BBS software
- you are running and which "Door Drop-
- File" your system produces. (Note:
- A "Door Drop-File" is a file which
- most BBS programs generate on your
- hard drive each time a user enters a
- door. This file contains information
- such as: The users name, time left,
- baud rate, etc. and is crucial for
- THECOVE to work on a BBS as a door, but
- is not required if you intend to use
- THECOVE locally (Not on a BBS) all the
- time. Just select the appropriate option.)
- To run local just type THECOVE /L
- from the the cove directory.
-
- (5) Comport: Allows you to set your COM port. The
- default setting is "Read from drop
- file" which means that THECOVE will read
- your "Door Drop-File" and get the COM
- port number from there (Which is usually
- the case). Or you can "Set Comport Number"
- directly. Or you can select
- "Nonstandard Comport" which lets you set
- the port, IRQ, and HEX address.
-
- (6) Fossil: Allows you to set if you are using a
- fossil driver or not. You can choose
- from "Internal Com Routines" which
- means you aren't necessarily using a
- fossil driver (This is the most
- reliable setting, try it first even if
- you are using a fossil driver). Or
- "Using Regular Fossil Driver" which
- means you are using a fossil driver. Or
- "Using Extended Fossil Driver" try this
- if you have tried the first two and
- they don't seem to work (This setting
- is usually used if you have your fossil
- locked at 38400 BPS or higher). (Note:
- A "Fossil driver" is a TSR program
- which regulates the flow and speed of
- your COM ports. It is usually loaded
- in your CONFIG.SYS file. You may not
- need a fossil driver loaded to run
- THECOVE from a BBS, try the "Internal Com
- Routines" first. If it doesn't work
- well, then consider a fossil driver.
- THECOVE does not come with a fossil driver,
- but you may download one from many
- BBS's. A couple of popular fossil
- drivers are X00.SYS by Raymond Gwinn or
- BNU by David Nugent.)
-
- (7) Locked Port Speed: Allows you to set the port speed which
- your fossil driver is locked at. (i.e.
- 19200, 38400, 57600 BPS, etc.) (Note:
- If your fossil driver is not locked or
- you are not using a fossil driver,
- select "Port Not Locked").
-
- (8) Max Time in Door: Allows you to set the maximum time a player
- can be in the door. NONE is the same as
- no time limit.
-
- (9) Path To Drop File: Allows you to set the path to tell THECOVE
- where to find the Door Drop-File your
- BBS produces. No trailing Backslashes.
- (Example: C:\RA)
-
- (0) Node Number Allows you to change to other nodes
- configuration settings. (i.e. If you
- are running a multi-node BBS and your
- node 2 settings are different from your
- node 1 settings for example). Note:
- If you are running a single-line
- system, don't change this option.
-
- (Q)uit To Main Allows you to quit to the main COVECFG
- menu.
